Crosses and cutbacks create the highest-xG chances in football, yet most strikers don't train specifically for these finishing scenarios. Mastering these finishes can add 5-10 goals to your season.

A cross travels from wide areas toward the goal, typically reaching the striker in the air or at chest height. A cutback is played from the byline backward, arriving along the ground toward onrushing attackers. Despite both originating from wide positions, they require completely different finishing techniques and body positions.

The cutback is statistically the most productive delivery type in football, with an xG of 0.28 per chance—higher than most penalties in terms of historical conversion. The key to finishing cutbacks is arriving late into the space rather than standing and waiting. The ideal position is 10-12 meters from goal, allowing you to strike the ball first-time as it arrives across the face of goal.

Heading from crosses requires perfect timing of your jump, keeping your eyes open through contact, and directing the ball downward. The most effective heading technique involves arching your back before contact and snapping forward through the ball, generating power from core muscles rather than neck muscles alone.
