A goal changes both teams at once
The moment the score changes, the team that conceded needs more than it did a minute earlier, and the team that scored needs less.
The conceding side pushes players forward, shortens the distance between its defence and its attack, and accepts more risk in possession.
The leading side drops its line and looks to counter into the space that has just opened. Both changes make the next few minutes more dangerous than the previous ten.
Concentration is genuinely lower straight afterwards
Players who have just conceded are still processing it, often arguing about who was responsible, and players who have just scored are still celebrating or being congratulated on the way back.
Restarts happen quickly and there is no natural pause to reset. Defensive shape is reassembled on the move rather than set before the ball is back in play.

Substitutions and tactical shifts arrive in the same window
A goal frequently triggers changes: an extra forward, a shift in shape, a defender withdrawn for an attacker.
Those adjustments take time to settle, and while they settle, marking assignments are unfamiliar and pressing triggers are inconsistent.
The period during which a team is reorganising is a period during which it is easier to play through.
Late clustering has a separate cause
The bunching of goals in the closing stages is driven by scoreline desperation rather than by a preceding goal.
Teams chasing an equaliser commit defenders forward and leave a back line that cannot be covered, which produces goals at both ends.
Fatigue compounds it: the distances between players stretch, and the pressing that held the shape earlier stops arriving in time.
Why it matters for reading a match
Treating each minute of a match as equally likely to produce a goal misreads how football actually unfolds, and it is the assumption most casual analysis quietly makes.
The dangerous windows are identifiable in advance rather than in hindsight. They sit immediately after a goal, immediately after a substitution or a shape change, and across the closing stretch.
Teams that defend those windows well concede far fewer goals than their overall play would suggest, which is a coachable quality rather than a fortunate one.
